Dindirin, Dindirindana is a villancico,a Spanish song form which arose in the later 15th century. Much of our knowledge of the villancico comes from two 16th century documents, the Cancionero Musical del Palacio (compiled c. 1495-c. 1505 and including Dindirin, Dindirindana) and Villancicos de diversos Autores published in 1556. As with Renaissance choral music in general, villancicos were composed as unaccompanied choral works, but instrumental doubling was welcome in performance. The present edition uses the authentic choral parts (transposed up a step), and adds a fresh accompaniment as well as expanding the form. All raised leading tones at cadences (such as the many D#'s are editorial ficta, following traditiona practice. Dynamics are left to the performers' tastes. The text is a dialect, presumably from northern Spain. It has several variant spellings, and the few French phrases mixed with the Spanish text should be pronounced as French: Ju me leve un bel maitin, Encontre, and a mon ami.
